Art Competition and Auction to Benefit Red Cross, Police and Firefighters' Families Fund

LAKE WALES- Local artists and the art community will have an ideal opportunity to be a part of the relief efforts for the families of those lost in the recent terrorist attacks, as a result of an auction being organized by a local gallery.

According to Robert Connors of Bellissimo!, "more than a thousand dollars has already been pledged to an auction bid fund" for the November 10th event. Keepsake ribbons and certificates will also be awarded to participating artists in a variety of categories.

Area artists are encouraged to donate "in the way they know best," by painting or creating sculpture or other works of art commemorating the event, or expressing the emotions of the times. All items contributed will be auctioned at the event, and all proceeds will be divided between the American Red Cross, and the police and firefighters' relief funds. Thousands of children lost at least one parent, in some instances their only parent, in the attacks.

"We wanted to find a way to contribute, and encourage others to contribute as well. This will give the arts community an opportunity to give to relief efforts by creating or purchasing an art work," Connors said. "Some works may be purchased and donated as memorial contributions for public display. We are working with the Lake Wales Care Center and the Lake Wales Medical Center to provide suitable locations for those memorials to be placed."

The auction will begin at 3 p.m. at Bellissimo!, Sixteen West Park Avenue. It will follow the Veteran's Day parade and Patriotism Celebration which will take place the same day in the downtown Lake Wales National Historic District.

The project is open to any artist or art student, whether or not they are a local resident. Of course, the auction will be open to everyone as well. It is expected that auction items may sell for a wide range of prices. "We want to have something for everyone," Connors said.

Art works created for the auction will be displayed at Gallery on Park during the days before the sale. The public is invited to visit and view the items. A guest book will also be available for written comments concerning the art and the tragedies they memorialize. The event is sponsored and hosted by Bellissimo! and EPolk.com.
